Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV)

Mass Loaded Vinyl is the industry standard in noise control. While there are many trade names for this material, all are a simple PVC sheet, loaded with Barium Sulfate or gypsum powder to add weight. Mass Loaded Vinyl is very dense, weighing one pound per square foot. This mass is what allows the MLV to be effective at reducing airborne noise.

We do not recommend the use of MLV in walls, floors and ceilings. Years ago, before new technology, MLV was a standard in sound isolation designs. Today there are lower cost, higher performance materials that are recommended for walls and ceilings, such as Green Glue or Sound Isolation Clips. MLV still has utility in wrapping curved surfaces and adding mass to pipes, ducts and steel framing members.

Mass Loaded Vinyl Pricing & Size

1 lb. MLV starts at $.94 per sq ft

  • 54"x30' (135 sq ft) $126.90 per roll
  • 48"x25' (100 sq ft) $99.99 per roll

2 lb. MLV starts at $1.86 per sq ft

  • 54"x15' (67.5 sq ft) $122.55 per roll
  • 48"x18' (72 sq ft) $136.08 per roll

This is extruded MLV, not cast. Cast MLV tears much more easily and is also more difficult to install than extruded.

Mass Loaded Vinyl Features:

  • High tear and tensile strength
  • Reduce noise transmission
  • Limp, flexible, formable and versatile

Mass Loaded Vinyl Applications:

Mass Loaded Vinyl can be used as a barrier material to wrap metal ducts, plastic plumbing pipe, steel columns, etc.

Mass Loaded Vinyl Performance Comparison

If you're considering using MLV is your walls or ceilings, you can see that the MLV wall performs only slightly better than the standard drywall assembly. Mass Loaded Vinyl behaves similarly to other materials of comparable mass. Therefore, it is an expensive source of mass relative to drywall. Mass Loaded Vinyl is approximately $.99 per sq ft and drywall at your local home store is only $.25 - .30 per sq ft.

  • Material: Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV)
  • Pattern: Smooth finish
  • Color: Black
  • Thickness: 1/8"
  • Weight: 1lb per sq ft
  • Tensile (PSI): 762
  • Elongation: 200%
  • Flammability: UL 94VO

MLV Installation:

Mass Loaded Vinyl can be nailed, screwed or stapled. It also can be reinforced and grometted and hung like a curtain. Care must be taken because cast Mass Loaded Vinyl can tear easily.
